Note on using this site:

To properly view the Lakhota characters on some of the pages within this site, download and install the Charis SIL 4.104 font. A link to the download page at SIL.org is listed under the "Charis SIL 4.104" link in the upper right hand side of this page.

The font used to transcribe the Lakhota language is based on the Americanist Phonetic Alphabet. Further information on this method can be found at the link I've provided under Americanist Notation.

The Lesson of the Feather children's book was originally intended to provide a method for teaching English/Lakhota. However, the publisher, Tipi Press, chose to publish only the English translation. The sample under the link "Lesson of the Feather" provides a side-by-side Lakhota text and its English translation. In order to correctly view the Lakhota text, you will have to download and install the Charis SIL 4.01 font.
